Trilliums

The Trilliums are popping up everywhere in the woods, but none are open yet.  It’s gray and rainy today, so there where no open flowers to be found.

The Cutleaf Toothwort are coming up too, but won’t blossom for awhile yet.

I don’t know what this is; I just think it looks cool.

Finally….

The first open Bloodroot and Spring Beauty. All I could find was one of each. I actually found them yesterday, but I didn’t have time to get them posted before I went to work.

Note the tiny little worm on the petal on the left.  The Trilliums are popping up too now, but none are open yet.  I’ll post those tomorrow.

Determination

Despite the cold, dreary weather we are having lately, the spring flowers continue to appear.  It was cold, gray and 42 degrees yesterday morning when I went out for a walk in the woods and these little beauties were a real treat to find.

Survivors

I went for a walk yesterday and found that these tough little flowers have survived being buried under 8 inches of wet, heavy snow for several days.   I thought the low temps would have killed them, but they are flourishing nonetheless.

So Glad I Got Up Early To See This

I currently work second shift, and I drive a long distance to work, so I don’t get home till 11:45.  I don’t go to bed till about 12:30, but because I loves sunrises (and sunsets) so much, I set my alarm for 20-25 minutes before sunrise every day.  When I wake up, I look outside and if it doesn’t look promising, I just go back to sleep.  This morning,at 5:30 am,  it looked like it was gonna be pretty so I got up, threw my jacket on over my jammies, grabbed the camera and ran out to the field for pics.  Then I went back to sleep for awhile.

Bear Attack!

Last Thursday night, when I turned into our driveway after work, I surprised a large black bear in the front yard who was in the process of raiding my bird feeders and destroying them.  The shepherds hook is bent at nearly a 90 degree angle.  The screen is torn out of the bottom of the tray feeder and I found my finch feeder out in the woods, smashed to pieces.  As soon as I turned into the driveway the bear took off running back into the woods, but the damage was already done.  This all took place at 12:30 at night, so everyone, including the dog, was safe inside.

What????

I shouldn’t be surprised, cuz this is normal for our area.  It’s very common to get an April, or sometimes May snowstorm.    I feel sorry for all the pretty little wildflowers that had recently popped up in the woods.  I took a walk this morning and couldn’t find a single one.  They’re all buried under several inches of snow.  It started snowing early this morning and it’s still snowing now.  I checked our weather at http://www.wunderground.com (excellent site with a lot of excellent photography), and they’re predicting 3-6 inches total for us. Of course, they’re also predicting temps in the 50’s on Wed. and 60’s on Thurs. and Friday, so this snow won’t be here for long.
