black and white afternoon

These pics are from Dec. 22.  We went out snowshoeing on the south side of Big Fumee.  I got some nice pics of a pretty little creek that runs along the trail for a ways.  I decided they looked best in black and white so I converted them all for this post.

Let nothing disturb thee;  let nothing dismay thee;  all things pass;  God never changes.  Patience attains all that it strives for.  He who has God finds he lacks nothing.  God alone suffices.

~St. Teresa of Avila~

I shall not pass this way again

I expect to pass through this world but once;

any good thing therefore that I can do, or any

kindness that I can show to any fellow-creature,

let me do it now; let me not defer or neglect it,

for I shall not pass this way again.

More Piers Gorge

This is the last of my pictures from Piers Gorge.  I took a walk along the Sturgeon River today and it was absolutely amazing.  It is every bit as beautiful as Piers Gorge.  I took a ton of pictures, which I will begin posting tomorrow.   I’d like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a wonderful, blessed New Year!

I found this on the snow, made out of twigs.  I thought it was very sweet.

Can you tell, I’m very fond of my snowshoes?

Piers Gorge

These are the first few pictures from my trip to Piers Gorge last Sunday.  I still have some more to process, and I will post them as soon as I have them done.

More Tracks

I went out snowshoeing this morning and found some new tracks.  I didn’t go near the game camera, but close enough to see that it appears that something walked by.  The tracks I found followed one of my snowshoe trails for a ways, then headed another direction.  I took pics of two of the better tracks I found.  The third pic is a track that I haven’t identified yet.  It doesn’t look at all like the fox tracks that I found in the woods and in our yard.  I’ll check the game camera tomorrow and if I got any good pics.

Happy Trails!!

Wolf Alert

After snowshoeing in the woods around my house for six years now, this is the first time I’ve ever seen evidence of anything bigger than a fox, as far as predators go.  Saturday afternoon I went out with my dog, Axl and found what I believe to be wolf tracks on my snowshoe trails.  The reason I believe it is a wolf is because the tracks are as big as Axl’s, and Axl weighs 100 pounds.  I found the tracks within a quarter mile of the house.  I also found a stump that had obviously been urinated on quite a lot.  I was told that that is characteristic of wolves when they are mating, and  it’s their mating season right now.   So, needless to say, I will be leaving Axl home and snowshoeing alone from now on.   I feel so bad about that because he loves walking in the woods and he is such a wonderful companion.  I feel like he is being cheated, but it’s for his own good.   I went out this morning and set our game camera up by that stump to see if I can get pictures of the wolf or whatever it is.  I know we have a fox roaming around back there because I’ve seen his tracks on all my trails and I’ve seen him in our yard a few times.  I also think I’ve found coyote tracks too, so it will be interesting to see what I get pics of.  We had fresh snow on Tuesday and there were no new tracks around the stump or on my snowshoe trails since then.  Here’s a few pics of the tracks I found over the weekend.  One of these tracks is Axl’s.

This picture is Axl’s print.

The next two pics are of the pee stump.

Happy Trails!!

HDR Trails

Yesterday, when I went out to go snowshoeing, I took my Canon Rebel and then shortly after I got into the woods I wondered if it was really necessary to carry such a big heavy camera when the small one probably would have been sufficient.  Well, I just kept walking and didn’t turn back to change cameras and I ended up glad I did, because I realized that I had never done HDR shots in the winter and I decided to try it and see how it would look, and I would not be able to get these shots with the little camera.   I didn’t have the tripod so I took these shots handheld and I did a pretty good job of holding real still.  For the first couple of shots I will post the original and the HDR merge, just to show the difference.  The rest will just be HDR. There isn’t a very big difference between the HDR shot and the one straight out of the camera, but I just like to play around with it.

Sometimes A Walk Is More Than Just A Walk

I went out snowshoeing Saturday morning.  It was cloudy, but calm.  I wasn’t very motivated or inspired, I was just out there to get a workout and some fresh air.  Later on in the afternoon, the clouds had cleared and the sun was shining bright and it was still very peaceful and calm, but my attitude had changed drastically with the change in the sky.   I felt the strongest urge to go out and snowshoe again.  I was motivated and…inspired.  I wasn’t out there for a workout, I was out there for so much more.   I was out there to take in that peacefulness and renew myself, and also to try to put my feelings into words, which is exactly what I did.  I stopped every once in awhile to look around and write what I was feeling.  It is hard for me to adequately describe how wonderful I feel when I’m out in the peaceful solitude of the woods, but I did my best.   I was amazed at the difference between my morning walk and my afternoon walk and it reinforced what I’ve always known; sometimes a walk is just a walk, and sometimes it is so much more.

I dress up warmly and head for the woods

For the second time today.

I was out on the snowshoes earlier,

Around mid-morning, and it was cloudy,

But very calm.

Since then the clouds have passed,

And it is sunny, and still very calm,

And though it is only 2:30,

The sun has already begun it’s descent in the west,

Making the long winter shadows even longer.

The light is already beginning to take on

A mellow golden hue.

The only sounds I can hear are crows,

Chickadees, and an occasional, distant car.

My walk does not take me very far from home,

And I am content with simply

Traveling along my usual trails,

And every now and then,

Changing course and breaking a new trail.

Once in awhile I stop and stand in silence

And appreciate the tranquility of this day.

It fills my soul, lifts my spirits,

And renews my belief that

No matter where I go, or what I do,

God is always near.

Happy Trails!!

Saturday Afternoon

I went out snowshoeing this afternoon in a different area.  It was pretty cold and windy today and  I didn’t realize until I got back that it was only one degree above zero.  I stayed warm except for my face, which of course, was exposed.  It wouldn’t have been so if it hadn’t been windy.

Happy Trails!!
